Book Arch
Portage Lake District Library, Houghton, MI Book Arch
The Book Arch and Reading Tree can be found at Portage Lake District Library. Designed by UP Engineers & Architects of Houghton. Quite a bit of interpretative licence was given to the shop in terms of material, form and specific design. It was a joy to be a part of such a significant community project.
Construction: The book "cover" is hand laid cherry veneer with solid edgebanding. The "spine" is milled out of a laminated block of cherry solids. The "page" edges are maple solids and milled with tapering "V" grooves in width and depth to simulate the edges of a book, the "page" face is hand laid curly maple that well simulates words on a page. The columns are quartersawn red oak, reflecting other work in the library. The columns have walnut capitals. Lacquer finish.
