Keweenaw County Courthouse Doors - Eagle River, MI
Painted quartersawn white oak doors, 3" thick
Project: To build and install new doors in the Keweenaw county courthouse entrance. Architect: OHM Advisors, Hancock, Mi. General Contractor: REJ Contracting, Lake Linden, MI
This is the first set of new entry doors for the courthouse since the addition to the original building that added the grand entrance, complete with columns in 1925. The doors were well worn and had become constant maintenance. The original doors were narrow and required the opening of both door leaves to allow wheelchair access. The Architects solution was to design a wider opening by pushing the sidelights out as far as practical while affecting the appearance of the original opening as little as possible. Compare the new to original photos. The new doors allow for ADA compliance with over 32" of barrier free opening using only one door. The full scope of the project included additional repairs and restoration to the entry area.
The door stiles and rails were constructed with quartersawn white oak over a laminated veneer lumber core (see drawings in photos above). The rabbeted jamb is 2" quartersawn white oak. Even though the door was destine for paint the beautiful oak was chosen for its durability and dimensional stability. Sherwin Williams Duration paint was hand brushed as the top coat. Hand brushing was chosen to be in keeping with the original building. Mortise and tenon joinery was used at all joints.
Hardware:
- Rocky Mountain Hardware: Handset, mortise lock, surface bolts
- Resource Conservation Technology: All weather stripping
- LCN: door closer and associated hardware
