Reading Tree
Portage Lake District Library free form reading tree
The Reading Tree in the corner of Portage Lake District Library, Houghton, MI.
Construction: Cherry solids, 2" thick. The trunk is of cherry planks fanned out (like an opening book) with the branches spreading out in a free form manner. The base is local maple with pull out bins for storage. Story time and play time happen here as the children sit under the often decorated tree branches. The design started with U.P. Engineers & Architects concept, moved to a small shop-built concept model, a few full-sized practice branches, then to the actual construction. Fun project.
