The Long Story: A few years ago Kraig commissioned this stool along with a tall-desk to match for his "Tiny House". He is quite sensitive to seating ergonomics and has used several chairs/stools over the years searching for good seating that works for the whole body. He is a firm advocate of the principles outlined in Galen Cranz's book "The Chair". I am as well. This is the product of our exploration into good task seating, translated into limited editions.
There were several sketches and numerous prototypes before we had a stool that met our expectations. The rocking aspect of the stool allows for movement into and away from work (or a meal) while encouraging a healthful posture in all positions. It is good for the fidgeters among us as well, allowing for gentle rocking while seated.
Construction: As the photos point out, the stools are constructed with through tenon with wedge joints. The leg is joined to the rocker with a tight, deep tenon. Glue used is a structural glue, not a standard wood workers yellow glue. The seat measures 8" x 15" with a full radius across the width of the top, the front edges are also radiused. Gentle at all points of contact.
Finish: The stools first get well sanded to a fine finish then a number of coats of true 100% tung oil are applied with a light sanding in between coats. This is an in-the-wood finish that delivers a soft patina without a plastic build up. The finish is easily renewed should the need arise. There is no stain or dye used, unless noted or ordered with a specific finish.
Seating heights:
- A typical dining chair seat height is 18". Typical dining table: 29"-30"; Typical desk: 28"-29".
- A typical office chair seat height: none. The range of adjustable office chair seat heights falls between 18"-24".
- Recommended: Comfortable task seating begins with a seat height that is equal to the measurement from the bottom of your kneecap to the floor, with shoes on. Mine is 21 1/2" I prefer a 24" stool when the work surface is adjusted to accommodate.
- Seat Position: A level seat is generally preferred for most seating heights under 24" A tilt seat of 1 1/2 degrees may be preferred for seats 24" and taller when used as perch seating. If you are a short person the tilt seat top will be more comfortable at tall stool heights. If you have questions regarding this option feel free to contact me.
A good seat height is clearly relative to the height of the one sitting. In general the taller you are the taller the seat height will be that feels right. The next challenge is to mate it to the work surface. They are a package deal. If you would like a table or desk built to your needs please see the commissioned work page.
- Taller seating will open the angle between the torso and legs, greatly enhancing your posture and extend comfortable seating time.
- The tallest stools are used as a perch where your legs and the stool form a stable three point stance.
- The 24"-26" stools work with the standard kitchen counter (36" height) for several applications.
- Stools are offered at a no cost option a 1 1/2 degree forward tilt seat to better accommodate perch seating.
- The 18"- 20" S-Kraig stools are made to accommodate our typical dinner tables and some desks.
- As a musician's stool the Kraig Stools are light, discrete, sturdy, and provide the movement you desire whether you are a guitarist, cellist, or...
